family history with music
For this blog I interviewed my grandma on my moms side I asked her questions that we brainstormed in class through this I learned new and interesting facts about my grandma that I didn't know or realized before. Family is a difficult word to define because I think it means the people who make you most happy in life and the ones that you can rely on without asking them to be there for you.
Me: Hi Grandma How are you?
Grandma: Hello sweetie, I'm good how are you?
Me: I'm good I called to see I can interview you for my music class, I just have a couple questions.
Grandma: sounds amazing, ask away!!
Me: ok perfect I just start with an easy question. Have you ever played an instrument before?
Grandma: Yes Hun I did, when I was younger I learned how to play the piano and the violin, one of my biggest regrets in life is not sticking with it and not practicing so that I was able to keep the talent and skill but of course I didn't practice and I can still play a little but not how I use to.
Me: oh wow I didn't know that! The next question is: what was your favorite song to listen to?
Grandma: thats a tough questions theres a lot of songs I love to listen to but I think if I were to truly have to pick on it would have to "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong that would have to be my favorite of all time I could listen to it night and day without getting bored.
Me: I don't think I've ever heard it before well have to listen to it after this!! My next question is: who are your biggest musical influences and why?
Grandma: I would have to say the biggest musical influences in my life are Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and of course the one how wrote my favorite song, Louis Armstrong. These artist were a huge impact in my life and I would grow up listening to Ella because that was one of my moms favorites so your great grandmas favorite.
Me: Oh wow I don't think I've ever heard of any of these artist I mostly listen to Zac Bryans and Luke Combs. But they sound cool I will look up some of there music after this. My next question is: Did you ever sing in the choir, and what was that experience like?
Grandma: Yes of course I did in our town church when I was really young we would practice on Wednesdays and would sing for the church services on Sunday's the older kids would sing in the mornings and we would sing in the noon services. but yes I loved singing choir it was one of my favorite things to do.
Me: oh my goodness I can't imagine you signing in a choir I've heard you in the car, hahaha. My next and last question is: what was the first concert you went to?
Grandma: Well interesting or not I've never been to a concert my mother never let me go to concert of course I've been to like school musical concerts but I don't think thats the concert type your talking about.
Me: Yea thats ok, thats crazy that your mom never let you go to a concert. but thank you for answering all of these question. I will call you soon, have a good rest of your day!!
Grandma: yes of course, never hesitate to call ever. Have a great day! love you bye.
Me: Don't worry I won't! love you to bye.
Hey Avalene, I think it's awesome to have learned new things about the people closest to you. Similarly to your grandmother, my father actually learned how to play the piano when he was younger, not that he actually plays it, but I thought it was cool to learn about, nonetheless. Unrelated to that, I usually forget how old "What A Wonderful World" is, as I remember learning the song for plays and school concerts.
ReplyDeleteAvalene!
ReplyDeleteI love your name so much—it’s so unique and beautiful! I also really enjoyed the format of your post. The dialogue style was such a nice change from the last few blogs I read, which were all in paragraph form.
Funny enough, I was just reading Anna Farmer’s blog and mentioned that I had hoped to interview my grandmother, but she was unfortunately busy—so I’m really glad the generator paired me with you instead. It made me happy, because grandmothers are truly wonderful and special people.
I love that your grandmother played both the piano and the violin. I’m always amazed by people who can play instruments—it’s such a graceful and timeless talent. And I absolutely adore “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. It’s such a beautiful song (I think Disney Pixar even used it in one of their movies!).
I also love your grandmother’s other choices—Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald are incredible. Random, but while I was listening to “What a Wonderful World” on Apple Music, the next song that came on was “The Nearness of You” by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Honestly, what perfect taste your grandmother has!
I ended up adding a few of these songs to my playlist—so please thank your grandmother for me! :)
Hi, Avalene! Thank you for sharing your interview with your grandmother! I actually adore the song, "What a Wonderful World" and I am glad your grandmother does to! It is so peaceful and beautiful. It is interesting that your grandmother was never allowed to go to a concert because my mom said the same thing! I am grateful that our generation usually encourages attending concerts!
ReplyDeleteHey Ava, I really enjoyed reading your post. I thought your definition of family was really cool. I agree with you. It sounds like a pretty interesting conversation to have with your grandmother. I spoke to my dad but if we did a blog like this again in the future I would maybe reach out to someone that I don't know as much about. Thank you for sharing and also, she has a really good favorite song!
ReplyDeleteHey Avalene! First of all, I enjoyed your blog so much! I was very interested on what your grandmother had to say and what she played back then, and as well as what she listens to. I absolutely love Louis Armstrong today and as a kid growing up, and I'm glad your grandmother likes that song too. To me, that's one song that just brings hope into many in my opinion. Anyways, great job on your blog!
